Field Day 2007

Wow what a field day, 10 m, 20 m and 40 m was just a booming.

Here at Extreme Amateur Rado Net worked by KD4YSG was able to work  30 states and 9 counties.
After having some tech problems with one of the mics on a old Drake TR-4 he went from 40 meters  to 10 meters until we was able to fix the mic. We found 10 was busy with contesters from around the world,
We worked 10 meters for more then 6 hours the contacts just kept rolling in on SSB voice, CW was just as busy we work CW for 5 hours making 154 contacts thats not bad for KD4YSG he's rusty on the key.

The rig we used for 10 meters was a Radio Shack 10 meter moble with a 20-25 watt out on ssb. we ran this off a 12 Vdc
car battery and a dipole up at 15 feet using KD4YSG's homebrew 1.1 Balun. the SWR across the band was 1:1 to 1:2.
this little rig never got hot and we receaved many 5 by 9's the lowest was a 5 by 7 not bad for a 25 watt moble and a car  battery!. Our dipole points east and west but we was able to hit South America and Canada, But most was from the
east and west.

The key used was a homebrew by KD4YSG a paddle like around 8" long and 3" wide, this key looks like a olde
1880's key but was built about 2 years ago. (Fred - KD4YSG likes old things)

Now were back on the air with the Drake working 40 meters, We had to replace the mic with a old moble mic,
and we also replace the mic input plug on the Drake with a standerd 1/4" phone jack. A quick trip to RS for the parts.

We was able to work 40 meters for close to 7 hours with and output from 70 watts to 305 watts, Now remember we had
to retune about every 10-15 Kc's, Fred just loves these old rigs. Our 66 ft Dipole up at 21' with KD4YSG's 1:1 Balun
gave us a better then a 1:1 up to 1:2 SWR across 40 and work just as well on 20 meters and 15 meters (we didn't work 15 meters.) We work 40 on in to the night until we could no longer hear anyone.

As for 20 meters we work it for 3 and 1/2 hours and made 79 contacts, Too many contesters a pileup was happing every
10 minutes or so.

As for the contest we had alot of fun and can't wait tell next year for this event....

The Drake TR-4 Worked well on 20 and 40 meters but was almost dead on 10 and 15 meters we never tryed 80 meters because of SWR. On 20 and 40 meters this rig put out a heavy 325 watts on SSB phone, After working this event I will be adding a fan to the back to help keep it cool. Wow this thing get RED HOT!

About this radio a good friend Gary West passed this rig on to me as a freebee thats right a FREE RADIO, I clean it up a little and then tested it out, It worked like it was new!, It covers AM, USB, LSB and CW. It has a quick tune-up time
on all bands. Most contacts gave me a 5 by 9 I did get a 5 by 8 from a special event station in Indiana.

Drake TR-4 a 1960's Power Rig.
The Drake TR-4 covers 10 meters in
3 parts it also covers 15M, 20M, 40M
and 80M bands. shown here with it's
MS-4 Speak and Power Supply.

The Radio Shack HTX-10 covers 10 meters
USB, LSB, AM and FM. Output is around 25 watts. This moble unit mounts nicely under my sheft. and  run's from a car battery in my shack.
